California College of the Arts & Levi Strauss
My Junior year at CCA I took a interdisciplinary studio course with Ceramist Nathan Lynch that brought together students from different departments to partner with Levi Strauss & Co, who at the time had been examining its apparel washing and finishing facilities based in 500 sites around the world. We worked with the head of their sustainability department to propose ways to repurpose tons of sludge they produce to reduce their load on landfills. My peers and I spent the semester experimenting with tile recipes that could be used to repurpose the sludge in a safe way. In addition to tile making, we proposed ways in which Levi’s could consider community impact, environmental mitigation and how they could start new fashion trends that avoided toxic apparel washing.
